Moon Beholders
Artist Katie Yamasaki speaks about her 'Moon Beholders' mural in the JANM plaza
DESCRIPTION
In 2014, muralist, author, and illustrator Katie Yamasaki painted Moon Beholders on the north wall of the Tateuchi Democracy Forum.
Moon Beholders represents, celebrates, challenges, and preserves different concepts in Japanese American culture and connects with the diverse community around JANM.
It depicts a young girl in several furoshiki, a traditional Japanese cloth used to carry, cover, and protect objects, most often gifts. The mural also features akari or lanterns, symbolizing light or illumination, and a haiku poem by Basho, a famous Japanese poet from the Edo period.
